Open-toe booties: Are they the schizo shoe?

I love an open-toe bootie, but a good friend of mine, who doesn't really care for them, calls them the schizophrenic shoe because they have one foot in the summer (open toe) and one in the fall/winter (bootie).

But that's what I love about the open-toe bootie - that you can wear them year 'round. A great summer nighttime look is a flirty summer dress and an open-toe bootie. Just as great is a wool shift dress, printed tights and a fun pair of open-toe booties.

My favorite look, however, is a pair of skinny jeans tucked into a pair of tall open-toe booties.

The search for my red necklace may be over

If you've been following my extremely sporadic fashion blog, you know that I've been searching for a red necklace for about two years now (check out my Sept. 3, 2009 post). It's taken me so long to find something because I really don't know what I'm looking for. I can't picture the perfect red necklace, so when I see something, I'm like, "eh."

Well, I think I may have found something that tickles my fancy.

This Amrita Singh Cleopatra necklace peeked my interest long enough for me to at least check out the price tag - $139 in case you were wondering. It's marked down from $300 and is being sold through Gilt Groupe, a members-only online shopping site.

The sale ends Friday. If it's still there Wednesday, I may order it, if not, the search continues for the perfect red necklace.

Salute to army green - it's the new black

Have you noticed that army green is everywhere? And it's not because we're at war.

Army green is the new black - at least for this fall.

If you really think about it, army green can be a neutral that you can mix and match with all sorts of colors from tans and browns to blues and grays.

While I'm fully supporting that you buy something in army green to add to your wardrobe, don't spend an arm and a leg because while army green is hot today, some other color is waiting in line to take its place. An affordable accessory, like a scarf or bracelet, could be a nice introduction.

And if army green is a color you never thought you'd wear, then definitely head to your nearest, most fabulous store and try on something that's army green. You never know how a color will look against your skin or work with your eyes or hair color until you try. Be daring!

I was in Anthropologie yesterday itching to use the gift certificate my younger sister, Torri, gave me for Christmas. When I saw this Corey Lynn Calter top, I stopped in my tracks. This silk, flowy blouse is adorned with chains, beads and flowers made of lace.

I love necklaces, especially statement pieces, but with this wonderful blouse, that will look great dressed up or down, no necklace is needed.

The shirt is no longer available for purchase online, but if you're lucky enough, you can find it in your neighborhood Anthropologie. I snagged this blouse on sale for $69.99, originally priced at $148.

I just stumbled across these fun denim trousers from Built by Wendy. They are ultra girly with the high waist, slant pockets and tied cuffs. These would look great with flats or heels. They sell for $180.

Gym shoes should stay in the gym

I've heard more than one stylist say that "gym shoes should stay in the gym," with the latest being a couple of weeks ago when Oprah had a shoe makeover show.

Adam Glassman, creative director of O, The Oprah Magazine, advised that women need six types of shoes. They are:

A black pump
A comfortable flat
An evening shoe
A tall boot
An all-weather boot
And a sleek comfort sneaker

I have all of these, but my sleek comfort sneakers had seen its best days. So, I replaced my Merrell sneakers with a pair of New Balance dedra shoes that were made exclusively for Nine West.

Glassman says every woman needs a cute, sleek sneaker - not to be confused with the kind you wear to the gym. "Your gym shoes should stay in the gym," he said. A dressier sneaker in a fun color is your go-to shoe. "It's like the comfort food of shoes. The comfort sneaker."

I opted for silver, not really a "fun" color, but I will get more wear out of silver sneakers.

I couldn't take my eyes off of actress Portia de Rossi's thigh-highs when she was on "Oprah" the other week with her wife and talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres.

The way she paired the burgundy thigh-highs with a black skirt and black heels was so fresh and modern, and not to mention, just adorable and perfectly ladylike.

So, of course, I had to do a bit of research and find them for my readers.

I was at Anthropologie, my favorite store, about six weeks ago when I saw this cape - the Somerset Cape - and immediately began to lust after it. I tried it on, which was a huge mistake, because I knew then that I had to have it.

The problem was I was supposed to be on a budget and the cape was $168. Ugh! So, I left the store without it.

But I thought about that cape for days. I sent links to my sisters and friends, so they could commiserate with me. Eventually, I put the cape out of my mind. "I don't need it. I shouldn't spend $168 on it," I convinced myself.

Then, about two weeks ago, my friend Raven, who is my partner in crime in buying things we clearly don't need, sent me an email. The subject was "the cape." I didn't even have to open it. I knew the cape had gone on sale.

I went to the Anthropologie website and it was $79.99! My heart started racing. I immediately called Raven to both thank her and tell her what a bad influence she was. Then, I proceeded to get the cape. I needed a small, but there were none left online. So, I called customer service and the woman found some at the Princeton store. I called the Princeton store, which was about 25 minutes from my house, to make sure they had smalls and to ask the associate to hold one for me. I dashed to the store, tried it on and fell in love all over again.

So what if the name "Sherlock Holmes" has been mentioned more than once when I've worn the cape. And so what that my husband's first reaction was "that's interesting." I love the Somerset Cape. It's a sophisticated piece that makes me feel like a lady, even when I'm wearing jeans. I love the slight swing, the 3/4 sleeves, the exaggerated collar and the belt, so you can still have a waistline while wearing it.

Was it $80 that I probably shouldn't have spent? Yes. But do I regret the purchase? Absolutely not!

I'm all for creativity in fashion, but I had a good chuckle the other day when I flipped through the pages of the latest Victoria's Secret catalog.

Under the company's "Sexy Little Things" line, you can add a bit of flare to your booty. This underwear is just for show, just for the bedroom, which is fine. But hopefully, your mate won't be too busy laughing than getting the job done.

You can tickle your partner with this feather thong for $20.

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery

The stylists at Essence should be flattered.

I saw this outfit in the October issue of the magazine last month and thought it was modern and stylish. From the printed tights, which you know are hot right now, to the great shoes with the suede piping. I added the grey sweater because there was a chill in the air this morning on the way to church.

Like most women, I flip through the pages of fashion magazines for inspiration. I was completely inspired by this outfit and since I already had a similar navy dress, copying this look wasn't out of reach. So I purchased the DKNY Chevron net tights for $20 from Macy's and the Harajuku Lovers shoes for $100 from Nordstroms.

I love a Mary Jane, but these are Mary Janes with a twist. The two straps are feminine and delicate. While the suede piping adds an industrial feel. The tasteful mixture of cream, grey and black allows the shoe work with many outfits (it also comes in blue/light blue). You will stand tall in these on the 4 1/2-inch heel and 1-inch platform. These are definitely the highest-heeled shoes I own, but they are comfortable and easy to walk in.

If you can't already tell, it was really the shoes that first caught my attention when I turned to the page in the magazine. These are my first Harajuku Lovers shoes. And, honestly, I had never heard of this brand before seeing the shoes in Essence. But after doing a little research, I found out that Harajuku Lovers is singer Gwen Stefani's fashion line that was launched in 2005. The idea for Harajuku Lovers revolves around the Shibuka, Toyko area of Harajuku. While Stefani's previous clothing line, L.A.M.B., is targeted to a more mainstream demographic, Harajuku Lovers focuses on her fan base.

Cookie Jeans feel like homemade

If you watch "The Oprah Show," you saw Cookie Johnson, Magic Johnson's wife, debut her CJ jeans collection the other week. The jeans are made for women with curves and booty.

Like most women, I'm always looking for the perfect pair of jeans and because Oprah raved about them - she actually said they felt like pajamas - I had to try them for myself.

When I asked for the CJ jeans at Nordstroms today, the sales associate said they have been flying off the shelves since Cookie was on "Oprah." I wasn't surprised because anything Oprah praises turns to gold.

I tried on the black straight (skinny) leg and they felt and looked sooo good. First, there's plenty of stretch, so they fit like a glove, and the satin-lined waistband added extra comfort. I'm 5'6'' and the pants slightly puddled at the bottom, so for taller women, you will still have room at the foot if you want to pair them with heels. But they would also look great with flats or tucked into boots. They come in black, grey and blue rinses.

These jeans aren't for the budget conscious; they start at $141, but that is on par with other designer jean labels.

Suspended in Confusion

The only time I think about suspenders is if I'm watching Larry King and then, I'm thinking about them for men. I never think about suspenders for women, but twice this morning, within an hour of each other, two women mentioned suspenders. And not just mentioned them as they were admiring them on someone, but mentioned them as in wanting them.

The first was my younger sister, Torri, who tweeted that she wanted suspenders. And the second was celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe's daily blog, The Zoe Report, which was all about suspenders.

So, I decided to do a little research. I know suspenders have never really gone out of style for men, but are they the next upcoming trend for women?

I Googled "suspenders for women" and a bunch of hits came up for the old-school type. I know 1980s fashions are back, but I hope these stay put.

I kept searching, hoping to find something cute. I had to sort through a bunch of overalls. These are $486 at Barneys, if you're interested. I'm not.

And I found a ton of suspended garters. Now, when I think of suspenders, I certainly don't think of this! But I guess since they are holding up stockings, they qualify as suspenders. They are $75 at Figleaves, if this is your cup of tea.

I found this skirt with suspenders at Speigel, which sells for $39, but it is only cute from afar.

The suspenders Rachel Zoe blogged about today are chain suspenders. She calls it a "tough trend" that should be paired with a destroyed Tee, skinny jeans and black nail polish. That outfit sounds cute, sans the suspenders. I love and respect Rachel Zoe, but I'm secretly hoping suspenders for women - chains or not - are not the next hottest trend.

Rain, Rain Go Away

Well, maybe not just yet.

If you have really cute rain boots, you almost want it to rain, which it's doing today in New Jersey.

I bought these rain boots about two years ago from Target for $19.99 each, but I've been thinking it's time to get some more adult-like rain boots.

So, I've been looking at the Hunter rain boot - the maker of the original Wellington.

While my printed boots are fun, I would go for a solid color in the Hunter - probably black or navy. The boots sell for $115 for the tall boot and $105 for the shorter version, which isn't a bad price considering the quality and craftsmanship (do rubber boots have craftsmanship? hmm). But I found my size on Ebay for $79.95.

This very adult, classic rain boot may be my next purchase.

Stackable Treat

I love a stackable ring, even if my fingers are too short to pull off most of them. So, when I saw this new multi stone stack ring from Coach, I had to feature it in my blog. I actually tried on this ring and it looks just as great on than it does in the picture. Plus, it will go great with day and night outfits.

Epperson Fever

If you're a fan of Epperson, the designer who became a household name while on "Project Runway," then you were heartbroken when he was eliminated from the show a couple of weeks ago. But the good news is that the Harlem-based clothing designer, who has designed for Erykah Badu, Patti LaBelle, Cassandra Wilson and Ciara, is back at it and in a huge way.

He recently showed his Spring 2010 collection at Harlem's Fashion Row's fashion show, along with designers Dinna Soliman, Lialia and Jose Duran.

Epperson's collection is wearable, casual and dressy all at the same time. The pieces flowed, yet fit like a glove where they needed and could also be worn on a variety of body types.

Organizing your closet

For the last three weekends, I've been meaning to organize my closet.

One: it's an absolute mess.

And two: it's full of summer clothes and I need to pull out my fall/winter wardrobe.

I keep my off-season clothes in the guest-bedroom closet, which I've been pulling from off and on the last couple of weeks. Some days, it's cool enough for a sweater and other days, I could get away with wearing a T-shirt. But it got cold in New Jersey over the weekend and I think it's here to stay. It's mid-October, after all.

So, always wanting to lead by example, I hope this blog makes me get off my butt and switch my closets and start fresh with a new fall/winter organized wardrobe.

If you're stuck in a rut like me, here are some great tips I found for organizing your closet:

Clear it out: Figure out what you're really going to wear this season. My rule is if I didn't wear it last fall/winter, I'm probably not going to wear it this fall/winter, so I set it aside for Goodwill.

If the shoe fits: If you keep your shoe boxes, take a picture of the shoes that are in the box and attach it to the box, so you know what shoes are inside. This is something that I really need to do. I keep my shoe boxes hoping it will help me keep the floor of my closet organized, but the problem arises when I'm looking for a Banana Republic or Nine West shoe. I have too many shoes from Banana Republic and Nine West, so, when I'm searching for a shoe I bought from either of those stores, I have to look in multiple boxes.

No sweat: Sort sweaters by color and don't hang them; you will distort the shape. Right now, my sweaters are in a drawer, but unfortunately, they are tossed in the drawer, not folded and certainly not arranged by color. I normally sort my sweater drawer a couple of times a season to keep them organized.

No hang ups: Buy quality hangers. OK, they don't have to really be quality - I use plastic hangers from Target, not the really nice wooden ones. But plastic is so much better than wire. My husband and I share the chores and one of my chores is doing the laundry. My husband has a closet full of wire hangers. If he has one, he had 100. I refuse to hang his shirts on those hangers. Just because your clothes are returned to you from the cleaners on wire hangers doesn't mean you have to keep them. They are trash!

All in favor, say "eye": Keep the clothes you wear more frequently at eye level. There's nothing worse than looking for your favorite shirt or pair of pants and you can't find it. Those clothes should always be right in front of your face.

When cheap isn't cheap

I have a dilemma.

I bought this beautiful R. J. Graziano necklace as a birthday present to myself in April. At $250, it was pricier than what I wanted to spend, but when I saw the statement piece at Nordstrom, it surpassed anything else that I saw the in mall that day. I actually looked for something just as fabulous, but cheaper, but couldn't find anything that came close.

I wore the necklace twice before one of the center turquoise stones fell out. I took the necklace back to Nordstrom, hoping to exchange it for another, but there weren't any left at any of the Nordstroms in the U.S. Bummer!

I was trying to decide if I should return the necklace, when the sales associate offered to send it back to R.J. Graziano for them to repair it. Perfect!

I picked up my prized birthday gift two weeks ago, after not having it for two months, and carefully placed it on my jewelry box, on top of every other necklace in there, because, after all, it was my favorite piece and I had missed it so much. Two days later, I opened my jewelry box and noticed a smaller bead had fallen out. Shoot! (Note: It's on the top right).

Now, what do I do?

Do I send it back again and risk not having it for the rest of the year?

Do I try to repair it myself?

Or do I just return it to Nordstrom?

I so want to keep this necklace. The first time I wore it, I got at least 50 compliments on it. I was at a Links' Luncheon with women as equally as fashionable, but my necklace was all the rage.

The second time I wore it, it gained nearly as much attention.

So, clearly, this piece is a show stopper and I probably won't be able to find anything similar.

If I repair it myself or send it back to R.J. Graziano, there's still a chance another bead could fall out.

I'm disappointed that the necklace was so expensive, but the quality was not on par with the price. I know it's costume jewelry, but when you pay $250 for a necklace, you expect it to last a while.

Biker Babe

I've been looking for a motorcycle jacket for about three years and I finally bought one today!

I'm taking at class at NYU and a classmate, Sarah, walked in Tuesday night with a fabulous black motorcycle jacket. I instantly knew that I wanted the jacket for myself. It was fitted where it needed to be. It had the Mandarin snap collar that I was looking for. And a bit of an edge that made the jacket cool. So, I complemented Sarah, who immediately told me she bought it from Marshalls and it was $29.99!

I couldn't believe the price, even for faux leather. I've never bought a faux anything and never planned to buy a pleather jacket, but this one is a good knockoff. It still feels like leather and the great style overshadows the fact that it's not. The brand is Freedom 2be.

To Each is Own

Usually I blog about what I love, but this blog is about what I don't like. I was in Marshalls today buying a motorcycle jacket (see above blog) and wandered over to the shoe department. I was amazed at the amount of U-G-L-Y shoes that the buyers are trying to peddle off on some poor soul.

All of the shoes were on clearance, where they should have been, since a garbage can wasn't available. As I slowly walked down the aisle with my mouth hanging open, I thought it would be different to showcase some shoes that are um, well, different.

These are Kate Spade's. What was she thinking? Shoes with pom poms are a don't.

Cave women don't exist anymore and neither should these shoes.

They still make these? I had a similar pair in 9th grade and they were gross back then, too.

I have no words.

Coach needed some coaching when the designers put pen to paper with these.

Sequins are hot, but these are not.

Cold-Weather Accessories

The other day, I blogged about great coats. But the coat is just the beginning of your outerwear look. You need gloves and scarves to successfully combat the cold weather.

If I have eight coats, I have 10 pairs of gloves and 16 scarves. Scarves are a cheap way to add a bit of flair or color to your outfit. Even on days that aren't bone chilling, you can wrap a scarf around your neck to add a bit of vroom vroom to your look.

This Anthropologie scarf is my favorite of the season. It's so fabulous that I would wear it even when it is hot outside. OK, I'm slightly exaggerating, but I love this look. This is a happy scarf. It's $98.

These gloves from Target look super soft and cute. The ruffle that hits at the wrist keeps the gloves ultra feminine and they are a steal for $9.99

The new trend in scarves is that they completely wrap around your neck. They are called eternity scarves because they never end. It's loose fitting and is truly a cold-weather accessory, rather than something to keep you warm. This scarf is exclusive to Urban Outfitters for $19.99

Long gloves were all the rage last winter. And they're back! For instant chicness, slide on a pair. These Nordstrom-brand gloves sell for $98.

Looking for luxurious? This Banana Republic gathered knit scarf is the answer. The price? $50.

You've heard of leg warmers, right? Well, the same concept is available for your arms. Lovin' these arm warmers. They're so urban and fun! The first pair are Donna Karan and sell for $395 at Nordstrom. If you don't want to break the bank, get the second pair for $18 bucks at Urban Outfitters.

Fashion Rules that should be broken

The other day, two friends and I were having a discussion about fashion rules that no longer exist. One of my friends said she was glad it was October because she could finally wear her boots. The other friend asked her why she couldn't wear boots sooner and the first friend replied, "East Coast rule: No boots before October."

I didn't grow up on the East Coast, but have lived here almost 10 years and have never heard that rule before. And I guess half the women in Manhattan haven't heard the rule either, because they've been wearing boots all summer. And I wore boots with a short summer dress in mid-September.

One of things I love about fashion is that the rules that most of us grew up with no longer apply. Here are the top five:

No White After Labor Day: White is a big trend this fall, so clearly, you can wear it after Labor Day. When you wear white in the fall and winter, pair it with a dark top and dark boots. Make sure the material is heavy - white jeans, cords or wool pants - so put away your white linen. And a white coat always makes a great fashion statement.

Your shoes and purse have to match: This is a trend I'm trying to get away from. My shoes and purses don't always match, but they are at least in the same color family. I have a great navy Beirn bag that I carry almost everyday because it works with many of my shoes, but if I'm wearing light-colored shoes, I will change my bag. I need to get more comfortable with stepping outside my shoe/purse box.

Black and brown don't match: But they do! I grew up being told that black matches every color. Brown is a color, so it must match black. There's nothing wrong with pairing a brown top with a black bottom. However, one rule that still stands is you shouldn't wear brown shoes with black pants.

Don't mix prints: This one may take some getting used to, but as long as the colors in your striped blouse match the colors in your argyle skirt, you're good to go.

Plus-sized women shouldn't wear form fitting clothes: They should definitely wear form-fitting clothes, as long as they fit well - and that goes for all women. Your clothes should fit well. I'm one of the most size-conscious people I know. If I gain a little weight and can't fit into my goal size, sometimes I still buy the smaller size hoping I will eventually get into it. I should just suck it up and get the bigger size, but my ego won't let me. Women have curves for a reason - to show them off! We should embrace them and show them off through our clothes.

Growing up, when I thought about sequins, I thought about prom dresses or old ladies. But sequins have a new face and it's screaming hip and trendy.

I bought my first sequined piece last week from Nordstrom. It was a simple black tank with sequins fading on the front from top to bottom. I thought it was a nice introductory piece.

If you're looking to ease into this trend, this h.i.p. sequin racerback knit tank is a nice top for $34. It also comes in black and dark demin.

Baby, It's Cold Outside

OK. It's not exactly cold, but it's cool. The high today in NJ was in the low 60s and the lows were the 40s. The change in weather got me thinking about all of the great coats out there. One of the best things about living on the East Coast is the need for a coat, well, multiple coats.

I love coats. I can't get enough of them. I think I have about eight and could easily buy all of the ones listed below.

This cutie is the Double Cloth Carlin Coat. It's priced at $298 at J. Crew. There are few things in life better than a pink coat. I have a pink coat and get compliments every time I wear it. A pink coat is totally unexpected!

Military style is all the rage and this Funnel Neck Military Pea Coat from bebe is a great way to salute this trend. This coat sells for $179.

I love, love this Somerset Cape. And it's the perfect weather for it - not too cold so that your arms can't be out. But this cape can take you through the winter. I'm seriously considering adding this to my collection.

Personal Shopper

I spent part of yesterday afternoon at Carlisle, where the beautiful clothes of The Carlisle Collection and Per Se are housed. The building at 16 E. 52nd St. in Manhattan is set up like a Park Avenue townhome. Warm and inviting. Plush couches and chairs. And clothes everywhere!

Carlisle is a personal-shopping service. The idea of having a personal shopper has always intrigued me. Having someone with better taste than me build my wardrobe. When a hot trend is introduced, I'm one of the first to know because my personal shopper has her hand on the pulse of the fashion world. Being dressed and primped. Who wouldn't love that?

Well, the reality of having a personal shopper is all that, plus a hefty price tag. As I walked through Carlisle, my consultant went over every piece of clothing on the mannequins and there had to have been at least 20. She talked about the details in the buttons and stitching and the quality of the fabrics. The sweaters were soft. The leather was buttery. The silk was, well, silky. And of course, I fell in love with just about everything I saw and touched.

The consultant was taking mental notes on what I said I like and didn't like. I also made mention of some of the items that were on my shopping list. As we headed to the dressing room, she brought back some of the items I was giddy over. I slide into a skirt that was adorned with ostrich feathers. Slipped on a sequined top and even tried on the leather pants.

Then I looked at the price tags.

While the clothes fit beautifully, the prices were way out of my range. The leather pants were more than $700. The ostrich skirt was easily $300 and the sequined top was $215.

I explained to my consultant that I wasn't aware that the clothes were going to be so pricey (there were no price tags on the clothes the mannequins were wearing). I didn't want to waste my time or hers, so I got dressed and got ready to leave.

But before I left, my consultant showed me a couple of pieces of jewelry because I'm still in the market for a red necklace (see blog from Sept. 3) and a silver necklace. The consultant pulled out a great silver statement necklace that is three pieces in one - that can be worn together or separately. It was priced at $125, which was in my price range, so I bought that, only to find out it's on backorder. Hopefully, it will arrive soon.

So, the lesson I learned yesterday is that it's nice to be waited on hand and foot, to be offered beverages and snacks while you shop, but it's definitely cheaper to shop for yourself.

A Conversation with Couture Designer Henry N. Jackson

Couture designer Henry N. Jackson might as well have been born with a sketch pad, needle and thread in his hand. He started sketching at five and had his first fashion show at 14.

"I had a full collection. I had day and evening wear," he said of his first show and adding that he spent his allowance on Italian Vogue.

Jackson, who showed his latest collection two weeks ago during NY Fashion Week, said his collections have always been about women. He started noticing them because of the "mistakes they make," he said.

"I would want to redesign what they were wearing," he said, laughing.

While Jackson said a lot of women make fashion mistakes, he doesn't have to look far for inspiration. "I see the women going to church around here (Harlem), how well they put things together."

Jackson creates for his audience. He is one of the few couture designers who makes clothes for real-size women and uses them in his fashion shows. When he was working for Valentino, he realized that most women who were ordering the famous Italian designer's clothes were size 10 to 14.

"It's become a stigma that all women (who wear couture) are a size zero," he said.

Jackson promised his mother, who is pear-shaped, that he would dress real-size women. "The women were tall and skinny in my sketches and I would show them to my mother. One day, she asked, 'When are you going to start designing for me and my friends?"

A couple of years ago, it became "fashionable" to acknowledge real-size women, Jackson said. Dove Soap introduced its "Campaign for Real Beauty," where execs are building self esteem in women by using women of all sizes and races in their ads. And in 2006, models with a low body-mass index were banned from Spain's catwalks. But even with it being "fashionable" to accept that the average size women wears a 12 to 14, couture designers certainly weren't letting them strut down their runways.

But Jackson is different. "As a designer, it's my job to be a visionary," he said, adding that most of his clients wear between a 10 and 16. He doesn't use plus-size models in his shows, because "the body can do anything" at that size, he said, referring to proportions.

Some of the most famous real-size women Jackson has dressed include Oprah Winfrey and Whoppi Goldberg. And the next real-size women he's expected to dress is First Lady Michelle Obama.

Winfrey first mentioned the Obamas to Jackson when President Barack Obama was a senator in Chicago. Jackson, who was living in Paris at the time, thought it would be nice to dress a senator's wife, so he started following Mrs. Obama's looks. While following First Lady Obama's fashion, he was also following President Obama's political gains. He used his network from Harvard University, where Jackson studied business before graduating from Parsons: The School for Design, to connect with the First Couple, who are Harvard graduates.

Once the connection was made, the First Lady picked a few items from Jackson's look book, asked for the prices and timeline. He hopes to do a fitting this week, while the Obamas are in Manhattan for the UN events. Jackson said Mrs. Obama initially selected a tailored jacket and sleeveless shift dress, but she later asked for some separates.

Jackson said he wasn't surprised with what Mrs. Obama chose because he was tracking what she was wearing. "She chose the clothes I designed for her," he said with a laugh.

Jackson said the all of the looks aren't one of a kind, but that's the First Lady's style - to wear clothes that everyone wears, like those from J. Crew. He also said it's her style to not wear one designer head-to-toe, which he said no lady should ever wear.

Other advice he said women should follow is to "be a lady. Have some class in the way you dress. You dress for where you want to be in life. We've forgotten what taste looks like."

"Less is more," he added.

And "always quality over quantity."

"Don't buy every trend. Build a wardrobe that can evolve," advised.

The Right Tights

I live in tights every fall and winter. I love how they look with a skirt or dress paired with heels, boots or flats. But my tights are normally black. I've decided to venture outside of my comfort zone this season and add some spice to my tights. I bought red, mustard and brown HUE tights to other day at Anthropologie.

I went in looking for purple because I saw a girl on the street with a navy knit dress, purple tights and black ankle booties and it looked really cute. I would have never thought to pair purple tights with a blue dress, but seeing it on someone else made me want to duplicate the look. Well, I didn't find the purple tights, but the colors I got are just as exciting. Purple is still on my list, though.

I'm looking for unexpected ways to wear the red, mustard and brown tights. I also have tights with an argyle pattern that I bought last year from Nordstrom, but never wore them. I pulled them from the back of my sock/stocking/tight drawer today determined for them to get some attention. I hope when I wear my colorful, fun tights they inspire someone else to walk outside of their just-black-tights comfort zone.

The weather is changing. The high today in New Jersey is 67. What's a girl to do for footwear when it's not quite warm enough for flip flops, but not cold enough for Uggs?

I found several pairs of transition shoes that should help us out until fall really gets here.

These cute ruffle booties are a steal at Bakers Shoes for $59.99. They also come in black. There's enough coverage to keep your feet warm on cool mornings, but the peep toe still says summer/fall. You could rock these with jeans or a sleek pencil skirt and colored tights. Purple or navy would be hot!

These comfy flats make a great weekend shoe when you have a ton of errands to run. They are the B.P. Frankie flat at Nordstroms for $59.99. They also come in turquoise/aqua.

I thought the days of pleated pants were gone with banana clips, but pleats are back - and in a big way.

With hips as wide as mine are, I was thrilled when designers introduced flat-front pants because they make all women look thinner. The new pleated pants are cute, but of course, the models who are wearing them are pencil thin. I'm still building up the courage to try on a pair, but in the meantime, these are some of the ones that are super cute:

Designer Dresser

I spent Saturday night dressing a beautiful woman.

I volunteered for the first time as a dresser for a NY Fashion Week fashion show. The designer was Henry N. Jackson, a couture designer who was just commissioned to create a dress for First Lady Michelle Obama.

I was looking for any way to get involved in Fashion Week. A front row seat to a show would have been ideal, but volunteering as a dresser was nearly as good.

I dressed Leigh Ann, who wore two outfits. She was stunningly beautiful in both. Before the show started, I had a familiarize myself with her outfits - did they zip or button, snap or tie?

And the jewelry - earrings, necklaces and bracelets. And don't forget the shoes. Do the buckle or just slide on?

It was an exciting night. We started dressing the models 30 minutes before the show started.

I had a small snafu with Leigh Ann's first outfit - I couldn't get the zipper zipped. It took three people - the model, the hair stylist and me to zip her up. I was thinking, "Did she do a fitting?" But once the zipper was up, the dress fit like a glove. Leigh Ann is below in her first outfit.

Fortunately, Leigh Ann's outfits were spaced out far enough that there wasn't too much of a rush to get her into the second outfit, but one model went out twice before Leigh Ann went out for the first time. We all pitched in to help that dresser get her model into the second outfit.

The clothes were elegant and were actually wearable. I love a fashion show, but some designers make their clothes so out there that I couldn't imagine wearing them anywhere. But Jackson's clothes were realistic. And he used real-size models, something that most designers don't do.

The jewelry was amazing. It was designed by Vickie Fremont.

These earrings looked great, but were a pain - literally - to put on. The model's ears were bleedings as her dresser slowly slide the thick hook through the hole in her ear.

Even though I was backstage, I could tell the fashion show was a success - Henry was smiling at the end of the night.

Fashion's Night Out was all about the Alcohol

It's Fashion Week in NYC and last night was Fashion's Night Out, the kick-off to the week of glamour where the stores stayed open until 11 p.m. and boutique owners entice shoppers with music and liquor.

My girl, Shani, and I had five stops to make last night - three were fashion related. The plan was to visit J. Crew, because the store on Prince Street was unveiling its fall fashion line. Next on the list was Intermix, just because they have great shoes, bags and clothes and the last fashion stop was to be Rachel Roy's Pop Up Store, so we could get a look at her new line - Rachel Rachel Roy.

We were armed with cash and credit cards. I haven't charged anything all year, but was willing to make an exception last night because it was Fashion Week and I have had a few items on my wish list for a while. I was hoping to find a gray bag, black clutch, black leather motorcycle-style jacket and leggings that don't make my thighs look fat. I could have been easily persuaded to spend more than I should have last night.

We made it to J. Crew, looked at the jewelry and drank champagne. The accessories line was great - love that cluster of necklaces on the mannequin - but we didn't see anything that we just had to have.

Onto Intermix next. Now, I've been stalking this Juliette Jake clutch at Intermix since March, but can't bring myself to pay $595 for it, even if my heart melts every time I see it. I was hoping that this beauty would be on sale. But the folks at Intermix removed everything from the store, except for a couple of racks of clothing. The merchandise was replaced with a DJ and open bar. It was like the club in there. Mad crazy! So, rather than shop, we drank Patron.

Disappointed that I still hadn't purchased a single thing, I couldn't wait to get to Rachel Roy's Pop Up store because her Rachel Rachel Roy collection is amazing and so affordable! That jumpsuit is only $129. Her collection is also available at Macy's. We get there, see the velvet rope and insane line and immediately know there's going to be an issue. The crowd may have had something to do with the Estelle DJing inside. So, we waited about 10 minutes - on feet that were already screaming - and decided to leave.

The night ended at The Mansion nightclub, where the BMI awards after party was taking place. Because of Shani's connection, we got into the VIP, where the drinks were flowing. Hennessy Black was a sponsor, so that's what the bartenders were serving up - all types of drinks made with Hennessy.

Boris Kodjoe and his wife Nicole Ari Parker, Janelle Monae and BJ, who worked at Baby Phat when "Kimora: Life In the Fab Lane" was being shot, were also in the VIP. Sweet!

So, while the only thing we spent money on was cab rides, we enjoyed all of the free liquor.

Matte Finish

I've noticed that one of the latest nail trends is using polish with a matte or dull finish. So, I bought a bottle of OPI matte polish today. The color is "You Don't Know Jacques," which is a grayish, brown color, which is great for the fall.

The polish came with instructions - Do not use a base or top coat, drying products or hand lotion. The first three will be pretty easy, but I have to lotion my hands. There's also a warning that the matte polish doesn't last as long as the regular OPI polish, I guess that's because you can't use a top coat.

I just used the polish at and first glance, I didn't like it. I missed the shine. But 10 minutes later, I love it. It's different and completely fashion forward. I painted my toenails, too, and was thinking I would put a top coat on my toenails because they needed something extra. But I have since decided against that, too.

I'm totally lovin' the matte finish. What's your favorite nail look?

Communicate with Clothes

The message you send through your personal style may have nothing to do with your bag, boots or bangles, but it has everything to do with your confidence, panelists said at an event, “Fashion Statement - How Dressing for Success Makes You a Better Communicator," that I attended last night.

“True style is having the outside match the best of what the inside has to offer,” said Bobbie Thomas, TODAY’s Style Editor and author of the Buzz Column for “In Touch Weekly,” who served as moderator for the event sponsored by New York Women in Communication, Inc., an organization that supports writers, public relations, marketing and branding experts.

Panelist Nancy Berger, founder of Grace Group, an individual and corporate branding firm, said what’s on the inside counts more than what’s on the outside. “It’s all about the confidence. What’s going on in your brain is more significant,” she said.

But to be confident, it doesn’t help to wear a great dress or belt and to put on a bit of makeup, the experts said.

Some of their style tips include:

“Dress for the job you want, not the job you have,” said Suzy Yalof Schwartz, panelist and Executive Fashion Editor at Large for “Glamour” magazine. “Collect dresses, then you only have to worry about shoes.” This Banana Republic dress will always be in style. Get it for $142.

"Understand your audience...if you have an important meeting, don't wear flip flops," Berger said.

“You wear your hair 365 days a year – that’s the best investment you can make,” Thomas said.

Don’t believe the hype. “Celebrities wear Spanx and get facials to their heart’s content,” said Panelist Amy Odell, Editor, The Cut, NYmag.com.

“Wear shoes you can walk in. If you don’t, it will show,” Berger warned. “Belts add a pop of color. A leopard belt is totally acceptable in a corporate environment.” This wide haircalf belt is available at Ralph Lauren for $450.

“Add a third element – one piece that doesn’t have to be there,” Yalof Schwartz said.

“Buy a good bra,” said Eve Pearl, panelist and Emmy Award winning celebrity makeup artist and consultant. “And learn how to put on eyeliner and basic lipstick. You are worth it.”

“It’s not about size. It’s about shape,” Thomas said. “It’s about proportion and balance.”

If you’re not sure how to dress during an interview, ask HR. It’s a fair question, advised Berger.

If you have cleavage issues, draw attention way from the problem with a statement necklace or scarf, Thomas offered. This Emilio Pucci cotton and silk scarf is at Nordstrom for $120.

Berger said everyone should have five go-to outfits.

Thomas suggested that women should invite over a friend to put together outfits from your closet. “They will put together things you never thought to wear together,” she said.

Odell suggested that everyone “invest in a tailor.”

And Berger said she always keeps three items in her desk at work: static guard, which she said is great for winter mishaps, a lint brush and a hand steamer in case you have an unexpected after-work event.

High/Low Fashion

I love the idea of high/low fashion - where you pair something pricey with something not so expensive.

That's what I did for church today. I paired a $165 skirt, that I snagged for $79.99 from Anthropologie, with a $6.99 T-shirt from Target. My shoes were $90 from Aldo and the pearls, about $7, from Forever 21 - clearly, they are not from the sea.

Just because you spend an arm and a leg on one article of clothing, doesn't mean you have to pair it with another piece that's just as expensive. According to a New York Post article, some tips to work high/low fashion include:

Buy from Ebay, vintage and thrift stores.
Educate yourself about fabrics, so you can intelligently buy cheaply-priced fabrics that have the look and feel of expensive ones.
Spend your money wisely - no need to pay $100 for a cotton T-shirt, when you can get it for $9.99.
Accessorize, accessorize and then accessorize some more. A great bag can elevate the cheapest outfit!

The Women's Shoe Suffering Movement

These are the shoes I wore last night to Delta's in New Brunswick.

No matter where I ended up last night, I was wearing these Betsey Johnson Reese shoes because they have been in my closet for about a year and have never seen the light of day. In case you're wondering, this is a sure sign that one has too many shoes, when you buy them and seriously take your time getting to them.

I saw them last fall in Nordstrom and like I do with all things fabulous, I instantly fell in love. I mean, look at them! Who wouldn't be a victim of love at first sight? The bow. The deep blue body with bright red trim and the added elegance of suede. I wore them with Theory dark skinny jeans that I cuffed into the boyfriend-jeans look and a short, red double-breasted jacket from Anthropologie

My friend Raven and I bought the shoes at the same time after we saw them individually (she lives in the D.C. area) and realized that we had to have them. Even with my infatuation, I was slightly hesitant because of the price - $165. I knew this was not going to be a shoe that got a ton of wear, but I also knew when I wore it, they would be show stoppers.

And they were show stoppers.

While I received several compliments, they hurt like heck. I'm praying that it was because it was my first time wearing them and not that they are just going to be shoes that hurt all the time. I have shoes that have never broken in no matter how many times I've worn them.

So, the situation begs the question of why women torture their feet (mine were still hurting this morning) for great shoes?

The Hunt for the Perfect Red Necklace

That's my boring red necklace that I've bequeathed to my five-year-old neighbor when I find a replacement. This little girl fell in love with the necklace when she saw it earlier this summer. That's how boring it is that a five-year-old would wear it.

I've been on the hunt for a new red necklace for more than a year, but I just can't find anything that catches my eye. But part of the problem is that I don't really know what I'm looking for, but I hope when I see it I will know that THAT is the necklace.

I have these sexy Jessica Simpson Brenda heels in Scarlet and when I wear these shoes, I'd like my jewelry to be just as fabulous. I've paired the two in the past and my feet were saying "hotness" but my neck was saying "yawn."

Say It With Fashion

If you know me, you know that I don't hold back. I say what's on my mind. Basically, I'm not shy.

So, when I saw this "Legalize Gay - Repeal Prop 8 Now" T-shirt, I had to have it.

I first saw it on Kathy Griffin's reality show, "My Life on the D List," when she was campaigning for people to repeal Proposition 8, the measure that was on the November ballot in California that goes against gay marriage. The wording, however, was so confusing that if you were in favor of same-sex marriage, you voted against Prop 8, and if were against same-sex marriage, you voted for Prop 8. That can confuse the smartest person, right? Anyway, the measure passed 52.5 percent to 47.5 percent.

Since I own and publicly wear the shirt, you can guess how I feel about same-sex marriage.

Whether you agree or not with Prop 8, clothes are a great way to get your point across. There are some great T-shirts out there with hilarious, cute, political and religious messages. A good website to start with is Good To Go Tees.

White after Labor Day? Yes Way!

When I got home today, there was a package at the back door. This made me smile. I love receiving packages!

Inside were my skinny white jeans that I plan to wear all fall and winter. I grew up in a time when you wore white between Easter and Labor Day, but Labor Day is Monday and there is no way that I'm about to shelve these jeans. Now, people wear white year round.

Suze Yalof Schwartz, Glamor's executive fashion editor at large, said if you put away any white after Labor Day, don't let it be your white jeans. A white linen dress, yes. But not your white jeans. Nothing is more chic than white jeans in the wintertime with a chunky, cozy sweater or blazer and leather boots, she told MSNBC.

And that's exactly why I needed skinny white jeans - to tuck into my boots. I have a pair of bootcut white jeans that are cute, but skinny or straight leg just tuck better. I tried them on with the slate Frye Paige Cuff boots and they look amazing!

I didn't want to spend a lot, because they are not going to be my go-to jeans this fall and winter, so I made sure the purchase was frugal - $39.99 on Amazon. The brand is Moto.

Boyfriend Crush

If you have a pair of skinny or straight leg jeans in your closet, you can achieve the boyfriend jean look. Just roll a cuff. The cuff should be a slightly sloppy and hit right above your ankle. The style looks great with a heel, flat, sandal or sneaker.

Chunky is Yummy

I'm in love with chunky, statement necklaces. I've been wearing big necklaces since before they became trendy. So when they became mainstream, it only increased my buying options.

The only problem - now just about every necklace I own is a statement piece. So, in July I vowed to friends that I was going to lay off buying big necklaces. But during my search for something dainty, I came across Tori Spelling's jewelry line on the Home Shopping Network. I'm a huge fan of Tori. I have to admit, though, that I'm a late bloomer. I never watched "Beverly Hills 90210," but developed my girl crush on Tori while watching her reality show, Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood. Tori wears her jewelry on the show. After a Google search, I found out she sells it at HSN.

While I was only supposed to be buying delicate pieces, I couldn't resist Tori's Mixed Stone Cluster Pendant in blue/green. It sells for $99 and is available on flex pay, where you can break the payments into two or three. You can also get it with a black and white pendant, but the blue/green is much more dramatic.

The Mixed Stone Cluster Pendant is a versatile piece that looks great with a day or night outlet. People say "save the best for last." It's like the necklace knew it was going to be my last statement purchase...for a while.

Have Boots Will Travel

When my mother reads this blog, I'm sure I'll hear from her.

I cannot wait for it to get cold enough to wear these Frye Paige Cuff riding boots that I bought about 10 days ago.

I first saw the boots in a Saks Fifth Avenue Off Fifth outside of Lebanon, Ohio two weeks ago and instantly fell in love. I showed my mother and her reply was, "You have to get out of the habit of wanting everything you see." I know, it's slightly childish - wanting everything you see - but there are so many great "things" out there, sometimes I just can't help myself.

But I digress.

Knowing that I was trying to cut back on spending, I just drooled at the boots as I placed them back on the shelf.

Two days later, I was on a plane back to New Jersey and I couldn't stop thinking about the soft leather, the Frye craftsmanship or the awesome slate color. Oh my!

I spent the next day tracking down the boots. I called two Saks outlets in New Jersey, which had the boots, but didn't have them in slate. But I hit the jackpot when I called the Saks in Woodbury Common Premium Outlets. The only drawback is that Woodbury Common is in a part of New York that's 90 minutes from my home.

But that didn't stop me, I had the lady in the shoe department hold my size 6 and I grabbed a bottled water and an apple and got on the road. A little more than 90 minutes later, I was trying on the Paige Cuff boot, which actually cuffs. Of course they looked fabulous and the fact that I paid $211 rather than the $397 that Frye is selling them for made the trip worth it.

Will Write For Fashion

I'm starting this blog as a result of a fight, well, disagreement with my husband, Phillip.

After 11 years as a newspaper reporter, I got bored and left my job in December with a year's salary and benefits. The goal in leaving was to find out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, or at least the next 10-15 years until I got bored again. Well, it's September 1 and I still don't know what I want to do next.

I thought it was event planning, but I took a five-week course at my local community college and realized that it wasn't event planning. I still love planning events - the details, planning the menu, finding the perfect wording for the invitation and the anticipation of the guests arriving - but discovered I only want to do this for myself, not brides or other people who would hire me.

Next, I took a calligraphy class. I thought I could have a calligraphy business. I struggled through the class - I blame my left handedness - and haven't picked up my quill and ink since the last class.

Then, I dabbled in public relations, which I'm still doing. I started Hayslett Media Consulting in February and have four clients. I write press releases and pitch stories for them. It's the next logical thing for an out-of-work journalist to do, but I'm not passionate about it.

What I am passionate about is fashion. I love haute couture designers, fashion magazines, fashion reality shows, clothes, shoes, bags, jewelry, fashion week and movies where the fashion is more of a star than the actual stars, i.e. "Sex and the City" and "The Devil Wears Prada." And I love to shop!

So, in one of the many nauseating discussions with Phillip about my job situation, he suggested that I blog about fashion. He even went as far to suggest that I go into NYC a couple times a week to shop, so I would have items to blog about. Now, the later suggestion is completely out of character for Phillip, who normally complains when I shop.

The fashion blog suggestion was good - I'll give him that - but since I don't have a regular 9-5 right now, I decided to start blogging about what's in my closet. And "Will Write For Fashion" was born.
